Broadband:
Q: What does contention ratio 20:1 and 50:1 mean?
A: This is the maximum amount of people that could be using your line on the BT network. The lower the number the better. Business services get a lower contention ratio and higher data transfer priority on BT's network should the local exchange become heavily loaded. This is standard on all ADSL services offered in the UK, and will not impact your download speed.
Q: What do you mean when you say 'up to 8Mb connection speed'?
A: This means the maximum possible connection speed is 8Mb. If you are near to your local BT exchange you can expect to connect at this speed. If you are 1-3 miles out you can expect to connect at between 3-6Mb and if you are any further often you will connect at around 2Mb.
Q: During the first week I experienced quite a few disconnections, why is this?
A: For the first 7 days equipment at the BT exchange will judge what line speed is optimal for you to connect at and preset this as your connection speed. This preset connection is determined by your line noise and stability with the equipment at the exchange and your router. The preset can be increased or decreased and is adjusted automatically by the above factors to best suit your line.
